Match the material to the rooms and conditions

List every room and transition included in the flooring project. Note moisture exposure, sunlight, pets, rolling loads, stairs, radiant heat, acoustic needs, cleaning expectations, and whether the household will remain in the home. A material that performs well in one room may not be suitable across the entire connected area.

Existing flooring should be reviewed for height, adhesion, damage, and possible hazardous materials before removal assumptions are finalized. The subfloor may need flattening, repair, drying, reinforcement, or preparation that is not visible during a surface-only estimate. Ask how those conditions will be assessed and priced.

Resolve transitions before installation

Door clearances, cabinets, appliances, stairs, baseboards, vents, fireplaces, thresholds, and adjoining floors all affect the finished result. Decide where the new material begins and ends, how patterns or plank direction continue, and whether trim will be removed, replaced, or adapted. In a strata, confirm acoustic ratings and approval requirements for both flooring and underlay.

The written scope should name the material, underlay or adhesive system, preparation allowance, removal and disposal work, furniture responsibilities, trim details, transition pieces, installation pattern, and cleanup. Retain product and care information after completion. When flooring crosses several renovated rooms, coordinate it with the wider whole-home schedule.
